Lubrication Oil Programme
CHALLENGEThe Lubrication Oils Programme took place during 2009 and involved 118 Scottish Water treatment works. The work involved lubricant changes on critical equipment where mineral oil grades were replaced with Food Grade equivalents. Any equipment where oil leakage could find its way into the consumer supply was deemed as critical. WGM were responsible for all aspects of the oil change programme:
SOLUTION
- The review of site survey data and appropriate selection of food lubricant types to match existing mineral grades.
- Procurement of lubricant and all equipment to make changes
- Planning and Scheduling of all lubricant changes including the flushing of equipment. Change of filtration equipment on compressors.
- The repair of minor defects found during the lubrication changes.
- Reporting on the ‘as fitted ‘ condition of every piece of equipment worked on.
- The labelling of every piece of equipment with the appropriate lubrication information.
- Removal of all waste and waste product from each site.
- The supply of Risk Assessment sand Method Statements for each site
- The training and dedication of two teams of Engineers working simultaneously across different sites
The Lubrication Oils Programme was a complete success throughout and reached completion within the allocated timescale and substantially under the budget set by Scottish Water CID. The lubricant changes were carried out on each site trouble free with no spillage of mineral or food grade lubricant. The information gained from each site can be used to dedicate a lubrication programme to improve the reliability, performance and lifecycle of plant and equipment used
CUSTOMER COMMENTS
“According to Project Manager Derek Upton, the project has been a complicated logistical exercise. ‘The technical side of it isn’t rocket science but does involve working at live treatment works so safety and ensuring no interference to the operation of the works has been very important,” he explained. “In many cases the equipment being worked on sits above water tanks so it is also vital we have safeguards in place to prevent any incidents when changing the oil as a leak into the water would be a major issue. Brian Campbell, Delivery Manager for AGA said the performance was a major achievement
